If you acquire from another race a ship that you cannot build yourself - let's say through trade, or capture - you may be able to reverse engineer its hull design, ie. clone it. This is likely to cost more resources and megacredits than building the ship in the first place (see your host configuration for details) - so trade is usually preferable, but cloning comes in handy with useful captured ships.

Cloning may only be performed at a starbase, and takes the place of a normal ship build order. However, cloning is not the same as a normal ship build order, and extra conditions may apply to cloning after the ship limit. See your build queue documentation for details.

Finally, some ships may be unclonable, and some ships may become unclonable after being cloned once. See your ship list documentation for details.
