All ships must have at least one engine. Large ships require more engines. There is one disadvantage to having more engines (they cost more) and one advantage (greater towing strength). The number of engines is not optional - a ship must have precisely the number of engines the hull requires.

There are usually 9 different types of engines available. All engines on a ship must be of the same type. Higher-tech engines are more fuel efficient, allowing travel at higher warp speeds, but they cost more resources and megacredits to manufacture.

Each engine type has the following characteristics:

Cost, in resources and megacredits

Engine tech level required at the starbase to build it

Nine numbers which are the fuel efficiency at each warp speed, expressed as percentages of the standard fuel consumption.

For exact details of engine costs and fuel consumption, see your ship list documentation.
