Mines are one of three types of structures you can build on your planets (see also factories and defence posts). When a planet is colonised for the first time, there will be no mines there. If you take a planet that has been previously owned by another race, you may find some mines already there - but you may not.

Mines each cost 4 megacredits and 1 supplies to build.

Mines will extract resources from the planet's core. The amount of each mineral extracted will depend on the density of that mineral, the number of mines, and the races occupying the planet. Some races have increased or reduced mining rates - traditionally the Feds mine at 70% efficiency and the Gorns at 200%. Reptilian natives also mine at 200%, so a Gorn planet with Reptilian natives mines at 400%!

You can build one mine per colonist clan for the first 200 clans. After this the number grows exponentially slowly: the exact formula if you have over 200 clans is

Max_mines = 200 + sqrt(#clans - 200)

If there are more mines on the planet than this limit, the excess mines will decay (usually at a rate of 5 per turn). Mines on unowned planets will decay to nothing.

If the happiness of your colonists or natives drops so low that they start rioting, mines will be destroyed in the riots.

Mines are also destroyed by the Rebel Ground Attack special mission

There is no other way to destroy mines, so do not build too many, since they reduce the happiness of the planet's occupants.
